A journey in developing a philosophy of education

Te Waka 2006. The crew all had a chance to go to this local ICT Conference. what I found so amazing was that even my own views have changed so much since my first NAVCON Conference. I am really trying to get to grip with this whole ICT thing. I am one of the few who can just about do anything with the technology, from setting up systems to working with children on producing anything using ICT technology. But what I struggle with now is the "SO WHAT?" step.
I see the SO WHAT step as the real leap through the looking glass. How do we use the technology to really support Teaching and Learning. Not just be an ends in it's self.
I'm confused about whole class teaching of skills that in reality will be out moded by the time a child goes through their primary years. Lets face it typing is being replaced by Voice Rec software. Will typing be a necessary skill of the future?
Saving to floppy has already become outmoded as now we save to Memory stick and even into ether space on the net.
How does learning how to make things look good in word help a child that is growing up in a world where the content on the net is more important than how it looks.
Recently I was surfing as you do and I cam across the most amazing site on developing thinking skills. It looked boring but the content was amazing. PowerPoint is another software that seems to hold some sway with teachers as an important medium for publishing. If this is true then how come people like Art Costa and Jamie McKenzie and Ian Jukes all refer to it as Powerpointlessness. I think the goal this year should be to get a handle on these wonderings and hopefully come to some sort of philosophical stand, based on genuine understandings and beliefs. I wish myself luck.
