Chicken and Egg time
Recently I was asked to write up a list of skills needed by teachers to successfully integrate ICT. I keep coming back to the same thing. Teachers need to have a look around and be inquisitive about the whole idea of Technology.
Creativity come from within. I have suggested that teachers think about what they would like to do and go from there. So far there hasn't been anything that I have thought of that I haven't been able to do. So as yet my limitations are my imagination.
SIMPLE LESSON.
Recently we had the senior school sports day. There were a couple of children who wanted to have a go at filming and editing. The sports day gave us the reason and the raw footage we needed to "have a play". Year 6 children.
Again this was done with simple software (iMovie)
Simple hardware CANON A85 Digital camera with 256mb Fast Card
The children took heaps of photos. The idea behind this is that we can never guarantee the quality of our photos when we are learning so the more they took the better the chance we would get some that we wanted to use.
Live footage based on a simple idea "Ask some teachers why they think sport is important in children's development"
The idea of making the questions simple was to reduce editing time. As the children get more proficient at editing then longer interviews can be undertaken.
The editing was simply using iMovie. Basically you drag and drop the clip you want and crop (edit) according to your needs.
The interviews were spaced with the use of still photos that gave the illusion of movement. The Ken Burns effect in iMovie is great for this.
The sound track was simply grabbed from a CD. As the children get more comfortable with the processes I will introduce them to Garageband so they can compose their own music for the film.
The credits were the last thing put into the film and the soundtrack was cropped to fit and the whole thing was packed as a QuickTime and exported ready to be viewed by classmates and teachers.
Total time 6 hours.
The children already have ideas for interest films they would like to produce.
They acknowledged the importance of planning and lots of raw footage to edit.
The curriculum areas covered included Language, maths (timing clips). But as usual there was so much more covered in the area of essential skills.
There was another group who were using MovieMaker 2 and attempting to do the same sort of activities. So you don't have to have MACs to do this stuff.
As an aside the children were very keen to put together a bloopers video to show the out takes and have a bit of fun with the whole thing. I will keep you updated.
